Gen 3 & 4 Erratic Fuel Gauge (Flex Fuel only)
From Taurus Car Club Maintenance and Modification Wiki
The fuel gauge in my ffv was inaccurate. It would occasionally display the right amount of fuel in the tank but most of the time it was way off. After searching I came across this page that had a cheap and easy fix.
Parts Needed:
Part #YF1Z-14A069-AA wiring ASY (I forgot the actual part name so I'll call it module) $40 at you local ford dealer
Tools needed:
8mm socket
7mm socket
radio removal tools $3
Time to complete: 20 minutes
STEP 1: Disconnect negative battery cable (8mm socket) Note: This step may not be necessary but I always disconnect my battery before working on anything electrical. Better safe than sorry.
STEP 2:
Push the radio removal tools in slowly till you feel a little resistance. Once you reach that point, push a little bit further until you feel the tools "snap" into place. Push the tools sideways towards the front doors while pulling the radio unit (ICP) towards you. You can let the ICP rest on the third seat w/ the cupholders or disconnect the harnesses.
STEP 3:
Remove four 7mm nuts that hold the dash trim in place (two of the nuts not pictured)
You can see the module sitting there.
STEP 4:
Remove the 8mm nut that holds the module in place. Disconnect the 6-pin connector and reconnect the new module
STEP 5:
Tighten everything back up and reconnect the battery. Start up the car and observe the fuel gauge to see if it reflects the right amount of fuel in the tank.
